We have been created in God’s image. God is increasingly restoring His image through Jesus Christ. Revival, renewal, and special visitations from God help us to experience His image in us to a greater degree. But what does it even mean to be created in the image of God?
“God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them” (Genesis 1:27). But don’t be confused and assume this means God looks like humans. He doesn’t! Instead, His image is the glory of God. The glory of God was on the Man and Woman when God created them. No other creature created by God also had a likeness to God, which was the glory of God. This glory Man and Woman carried distinguished them from the animals and gave them power to rule on earth.
Then Adam and Eve sinned. They had been clothed in the glory of God. Then they sinned and fell short of the glory. The glory of God was lifted off of them, and they were naked. They were not in the likeness of God anymore.
We will not be fully in the likeness of God again until Jesus returns and we are in our glorified bodies. That will be the restoration of what God intended for humanity.
Today, we do have God’s Spirit and can be born again. Until Jesus returns and we received glorified bodies, a measure of God’s glory is available to us now. We are made new creations in Jesus Christ and filled with resurrection life. God wants to revive His people and bring His presence, power, and glory to His Church. Will the people of God pursue the glory of God in the present day?
Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV)
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Romans 3:23 (NIV)
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
